Post Prop 8

This is me on election night. I stood with my sign outside the voting site until the bitter end.

Sorry for my absence, Gentle Readers, but I've been a little preoccupied since the Mormons convinced 52% of California voters to put discrimination right into our state constitution this week by approving Proposition 8.

It is the first time a constitution was changed to take rights away from people who already had them. Isn't that charming?

Californians are offended that such a strong out of state push caused this. And if there is any silver lining in this at all, it's that everyone else now hates Mormons almost as much as I do.

People are pissed. I mean, really pissed. We marched 10,000 people strong through the streets of San Diego today - I don't have any pictures, but they are all over the news.

We are not going to stand for this, Gentle Readers. You have my solemn vow that from here on in I will do whatever is necessary to protect MY marriage to Poor George. I hope you are with me.

More coming.

CP, our hearts go out to you. A check to whoever is fighting this mess will follow.

What can we do? As Bubs said, our checkbooks are ready.

It's such a huge horrifying mess, it stuns me.

They're just pissed because they can't practice bigamy;)

It makes me angry. It makes me sad. How can a state that went for Obama vote against a basic right? Whatever I can do, CP, whatever I can do.

I can't believe this has happened. I am also pissed, pissed enough that my roommate and I (who both have gay siblings) protested downtown Chicago last night with a huge group of rainbow-flag carrying chanters. That dick James Dobson was there accepting an award from some media group, and we took the opportunity to demonstrate.

At one point I got some video of a little boy holding a sign sign that said "I love my gay nanny," and we just melted into tears.

I was thinking of lots of people as we marched - especially my two gay brothers and my many gay friends, including you two.

P.S. I just mentioned you in this blog post, where I share photos from last night's gay rights march.

I have started typing a comment, then erased it about 20 times now because I can't come up with anything to say to express how heartbroken I am for you and everyone else in your situation AND how furious I am that this sort of bigoted, hateful mindset has been victorious. This shit is fucking wrong. It makes me physically sick. I will do whatever I can to help correct this.

There aren't enough words to express my disappointment, and my support for you CP.

I'm with you and still incredibly disappointed. I'm ready to donate, just let me know what group you think is best mobilized to fight to the end.

I was thinking of you and PG as I watched it happening. You have captured the injustice well.
It's moronic

Funny that these people all worship Jesus, who was single and strictly hung around with other fellas.

Of course I'm with you.

I've said before on my blog and on some others that this was all kind of a theoretical issue for me. But in the past 10 years, I have many more friends and coworkers who are openly gay or lesbian. I've been to their homes, seen their loving, committed relationships up close, enjoyed being with them so much.

Things are different now. It's much more personal. These are MY friends and I can't stand the thought of them being second-class citizens, not enjoying all of the rights I enjoy. They are among the most moral, decent and caring people I know. What happened Tuesday is truly immoral and un-American.

I'm with CP and PG. I wish I could say something wonderful...truth be told I am really hurt and disappointed.

The church is best when separated from the state. It's medical accomplishments, Mother Theresa, Alcoholics Anonymous, the list is long; all fantastic contributions to society. On the other hand, going back to the conversion of the Ottoman empire, the church has been shameful in its political influence. In fact, besides the Catholic pedophilia scandal, I can't think of a historical black spot that didn't have to do with politics.

I'm sorry for carrying on; I'm disappointed and without solution, without a next step, without a place to take the fight...I'm heart-broken.

I luv yaz,

Eebs

By the way, can we kill The Osmonds now?

You all are so awesome - thanks for being our friends and supporters. Of course this is a fight that affects all of us anyway, not just PG and me. Same way the fight against racism and sexism involves all of us, not just women and racial minorities. And what a great thing it is that our evolution toward ending racism has taken such a great leap forward with the election of Obama. (I'm pissed that Prop 8 has detracted from my joy of having him as President.)

I am not sure what the best course of action right now is for you except KEEP TALKING ABOUT THIS WITH EVERYONE YOU KNOW. EVERYONE MUST FEEL THE OUTRAGE. This must not get swept under the carpet. That's the biggest thing you can do right now.

Thanks all.

I wish I could've voted in the California election this year. I don't actually want to live there, just vote there to defeat this ridiculous proposition.
