Music Meme

Dale tagged me. I normally don't play along on these music tags, but for Dale, anything.

What was the first recorded music you bought?

A 45 of "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees, 1976.

What was the last music you bought?
I downloaded three albums from iTunes the night before I went to see Mindy:
  • Elliott Yamin: (self-titled debut) - worth a listen.
  • Gladys Knight: Before Me - her new jazz album
  • Belinda Carlisle: Voilà - new album of French standards, sung entirely in French. How could one possibly resist this?

What was the first "professional" music show you ever went to?

Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Don't remember what they performed.

What was the last?
Beat Circus at a small club in NYC. A friend of ours plays in the band.

What's your "desert island" album?
Impossible to answer; how could you not get sick of only one album? But if I had to grab something on the way out of a burning building, it would probably be

Nat King Cole Trio: After Midnight

Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out

Red Hot & Blue: Tribute to Cole Porter

What's your favorite album/song title? (the *title* , not the actual album or song).
Like Dale, didn't give this much thought. I'd probably say "Not Fade Away" by Buddy Holly, because it's just a strange song title. Simple and strange. Just like me.

What's your favourite album art (include an image of it if you can)?
See Brubeck's "Time Out" above. Also, who could ever forget this?

Ideal choice for a karaoke song?
Me and Mrs. Jones, especially when my Mom sings it.

Song you don't like that WILL NOT LEAVE YOUR HEAD if you hear it.
Every Breath You Take. Blech.

Which is cooler? -- Vinyl? CD? Cassette? 8-track?
Which is cooler? What is this, junior high? If I had to choose I would say 8-track. Mindy's parents had one and we listened to a Barry Manilow 8-track during dinner the first time I visited her family. When Mindy started belting out "Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed?" along with Barry, at the top of her lungs, her mom made us turn it off. Good times.

I tag Mindy June and Katie Schwartz.

Can I interest you in tickets to the Police reunion? I'm sure they'll play your favorite song.

Ha! I was waiting for the first hipster to claim he loved 8-track the best...Dale flirted with it, but he claimed he only loved 8-track for its crappiness. You boldly and without qualification embraced the 8-track!

I now picture you on road trips to places like Wall Drug and Ruby Falls in your El Camino, Cole Porter and Dave Brubeck blasting from your 8-track.

Sharon, only if the Go-Go's open for them like they did in '81.

Hi Bubs, funny you should call me a "hipster" when my love for the 8-Track comes from listening to Barry Manilow on it.

That just means that you;re an ironic, post-modern, contrarian hipster.

Suits me.

Don't you love Red Hot & Blue: Tribute to Cole Porter? Did you see the show where they played all the videos? k.d. lang's "So in Love" — song and video — still tear me up.

How are the Gladys Knight and Belinda Carlisle albums?

Yes Beth, RH&B is an excellent compilation. I bought it when it came out in 1990 and I've never gotten tired of it. Yes, I saw the videos - that's the one where k.d. is hand washing women's lingerie, I think.

The Gladys Knight album is excellent as one would expect from her. The Belinda album is about what you'd expect, although her accent is right on the money which makes us think maybe she married a French guy. I've always loved her voice, though I didn't like any of the songs she did during her solo years. So this is a good change. For anyone who likes Belinda + French standards, I would recommend it. If you don't like either of those, don't bother.

I would like to correct one detail of our 8-track experience. We were not eating dinner. We were playing bridge. I don't sing at the dinner table. But since many of your readers aren't Barry aficionados, the lyrics to the song:

Who's been sleeping in my bed getting what I get when I don't get it..(and it goes on from there.)

My parents loved that.

Coaster Punchman said...

Ok, except we weren't playing bridge because we didn't learn that until we were grownups. We were probably playing some board game or "Celebrity" or something.

I thought I posted a comment here but the cold I'm nursing may be tricking me.

Loved a lot of the Red Hot + Blue but especially the Neneh Cherry, Jody Watley, David Byrne and was it Lisa Stansfield who did the Down in the Depths number? Hated the U2 and several others though.

Love the mixology involved in going from Disco Duck to Mme Carlisle and everywhere else too. Jazzy man.

Hi Dale, yes, my musical preferences leave one with the (correct) impression that I am schizoid/bipolar. I don't hate anything on RH&B, though I do like some more than others. Yes, that is Lisa S. on Down in the Depths.

barry manilow 8 track? that is too perfect.

love the cars album cover. I so remember that. though, I always thought it felt like a rip off of a bette midler album, the divine miss m.

thanks for the meemish, will totally meem it up this week.

You know, "The Divine Miss M" album is one that I have heard about for years but have never actually listened to. The truth is I don't like Bette Midler. She's funny as an actress, but I have NO idea why anyone likes her singing. Plenty of people seem to, though, so good for them.

Oooh, Brubeck! "Three To Get Ready" would be the perfect song to explore the desert island to.

Coaster Punchman said...

Brubeck is perfect all around, Write. Only problem with bringing him to th desert island is that I have a strong urge to mix cocktails whenever I hear him. So I hope there would be rum there.

Writeprocrastinator said...

"So I hope there would be rum there."

Worse yet, an island with rum, but no papaya, guava or coconut.

Coaster Punchman said...

This is true. Straight rum shots would not be as much fun. But in a pinch...

Punch, how old are you? Disco Duck was also my first album!!!!
