CPW Confessional Vol. 1

I like approximately four Bryan Adams songs, even though I still refer to him as "Pizza Face."

'69 = yes
no on the other two
I actually got caught on an elevator rocking down to "I need somebody....."
v. embarassing.

Huey Lewis is my guilty pleasure, even though I still refer to him as "dad"....

Huey! Heart of Rock 'n Roll! I don't know, Min, Sharon, what is the geek factor in loving the Hu-Man?

echo said...

It's wrong, just wrong, I tell ya... It's truly the only shitty thing you'll find in my record/CD/iTunes collection. It's wrong on soooo many levels, and a source of embarassment in this house - one that is used consistently against me if I turn the snob-o-meter up too high with friends. "Echo listens to Huey Lewis..." Oh the horror...

Coaster Punchman said...

Echo, you must be a young'un. Once you're old & wizened like Mindy June & me, you'll come to realize that those guilty pleasures in your music collection are to be worn like a badge of honor. Why, Mindy June is even including at least one Barry Manilow track in her 40 at 40 collection. It will be like a transcendental awakening when you get there. We'll be waiting for you.

How young is a young 'un, CP? Throw me a range...

Coaster Punchman said...

Don't worry Echo, you'll know when you're old enough to graduate from MySpace....

echo said...

Oh, snap! I'm 38ish. MySpace is the right side of the closet...

Old Lady said...

I like Copa Cabana! Also King Crimson-But yes, the older one gets the less they care what other people think about their music taste!

echo said...

I could care less what others think of my musical taste - it is what I think of my musical taste that matters. And frankly, the whole Huey Lewis situation disgusts me... There. I just slapped myself over the situation!

It's like when you go shopping and there's something you want, but you know it's crap. Still, you've gotta have it, even though you know it's absolute shite! You buy it, and then you're disgusted with yourself, spending hours trying to wash away the shame...

"If this is it, please let me know. If this ain't love, you better let me gooooo..." Oh, god, I'm gonna hurl....

Coaster Punchman said...

It's OK Echo, it won't make you go blind, really....

yeah, and stupid jerk ryan adams gets so pissed when people confuse him for bryan and i love it love it love it.

Echo likes pussy rock.

By the way, I love "Summer of '69."

Buncha old farts! I'll include myself in that comment. Huey Lewis, Bryan Adams and who remembers the Greg Kihn Band? I don't know. I can be pretty snobbish about my music, but when I feel like rockin' out to some choice "vintage" tunes I turn the snob factor way down low. And I am having some problems with the whole My Space war. I have a page there, but I do it because the band dudes I am friends with have pages.........does that make me bad?

Coaster Punchman said...

Hmmmm, not sure... how old are your band dudes? If they're over 30, they should really be over here.

echo said...

Thanks, Tenacious - S. Like I wasn't having enough problems with the Huey Lewis thing, now I've gotta fess up to the Khin-spiracy, Khin-tagious...Khin-FuckMe!!!!!???? Thanks... I need a shower again...

"Our love's in jeopardy, baby, oooh ooooh ooh"

Coaster Punchman said...

Ok Echo, it's about time you come clean. What other geek bands do you have up your sleeve? Mister Mister? Air Supply? Oh God, don't tell me... Night Ranger?

echo said...

Okay... the Tubes (Fee Waybill rocks!)... Wall of Voodoo... Oingo Boingo... Nothing as damning as fucking Huey Lewis or the Greg Khin Band...

Coaster Punchman said...

I think Lulu used to know one of the Tubes. Six degrees, pal - and maybe one of the Tubes knows Kevin Bacon!

echo said...

I worked with a nephew of the late bass player of Huey Lewis and the News... Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

Coaster Punchman said...

Well then you are DEFINITELY six degrees or less to KB. You are worthy to be praised!

Tenacious S said...

Echo, sorry I tainted the waterhole with Greg Kihn. Can't say I even often remember that he existed, but once you do, look out. Here's another great one that gets me everytime, Naked Eyes. "Always somethin' there to remind me..." There were some beautiful moments in the 80's and some damn scary ones.

Coaster Punchman said...

Which category does Naked Eyes fall into?

echo said...

Beautiful, scary stalker music...

Tenacious S said...

The overuse of synthesizer group. When you are using your synthesizer to sing, "I'll always love you," something has gone wrong in the creative process. The sick thing is, this is burned into my brain in such a way that I believe even hypnotherapy or the cool flashy thing from Men in Black couldn't erase it. There are many things in my brain like this. Sometimes it's a problem.

Melinda June said...

I'm so sad I've been off getting educated instead of participating in this conversation.

First of all, echo, WTF with the Huey Lewis?? Molesters say they can't help themselves, too...but does that make them any less sick? Get some help.

And Sharon. YOU are evil for that whole Greg Kihn thing. You, who dumped a guy for wearing a Van Halen t-shirt DARE suggest that the Kihnster is worth a listen???? How can you NOT love DLR and the boys, yet endorse a man who's song was better when remade by Weird Al Yankovic???? (Sigh) Oh, the humanity!

By the way, my verification word is "apegum."

Melinda June said...

Oh, and echo...you show a glimmer of hope with the Tubes reference. Not only do you show the appropriate respect, but you can effortlessly drop the name "Fee Waybill." That's sheer poetry.

echo said...

"Step right up, now don't be shy..."

Melinda June, do you think I'm not sick about the whole Huey Lewis thing?? I bought Small World!! Only Huey and his family bought that stinkin' record. WTF is wrong with me????

Fee Waybill rocks....

Tenacious S said...

Hey, hey, hey.....I never said Greg Kihn was my guilty pleasure, just that it is burned into my brain and resurrects itself at inopportune moments. I do have guilty pleasures and I will divulge the most embarassing one now, Rod Stewart. I do not own any of his records, because like Echo, I would feel the need to chastise myself and would be embarassed if anyone found them. I am my own worst critic. God help me, but even at 41 I feel the need to keep some form of image going. Preferably, not that of a complete idiot. What if I were to randomly run into someone I used to work with at the radio station? What if they came for a visit? What if they saw my collection? How would I explain all of this........

Coaster Punchman said...

Shar, I will forgive you Rod Stewart as long as you don't like the song with that blond curly haired kid in the video. That one really sucks.

Tenacious S said...

No, I don't particlarly like "Forever Young." The song I am willing to lose cred over is "Young Turks." I'll put the video up one of these days and parade it around for all to see. I also have an old ELO habit, again, with no vinyl trace.

Coaster Punchman said...

I put "Calling America" on a mixed cd for Mindy just to annoy her a little bit after she moved to England. I think she liked it.

Dale said...

A friend of mine got married outdoors and after all was done, they came back up the aisle to the strains of Everything I Do, I Do It For You. All the little woodland creatures threw up at once. Me? I was hurt. I thought it was our song. She's no friend of mine any longer.

Coaster Punchman said...

That's just wrong, Dale.

lulu said...

I heart Rod Stewart, Young Turks, yes, Maggie May, totally yes. I actually like his really cheesy disco stuff too, even Do Ya Think I'm Sexy.

That one Greg Kihn video was pretty cool.

And yes, my friend Karolee at St Olaf was the niece of a Tube, but even without him we can get to Kevin Bacon in 2 steps, Steve knows Jon McNaughton who directed Wild Things. Done in two.

Generally, I follow the Chuck Klosterman Ironic Hipster Contrarian theory which is basically to say that *all* music sucks and therefore you are completely free to continue claiming to be cool while listening to Britney Spears.

Melinda June said...

I only liked "Calling America" because I thought it was some sort of love note from you, but now that I know it was a joke you can just go fuck yourself.

Lu, don't you think all Rod Stewart hits sound like they're about child molestation? I do. Why must she stay away from his window? Because they neighbors will see he's seducing a twelve year old.

But Britney Spears? Now THERE'S a guilty pleasure. I say if you're going to be naughty, be filthy while you're at it. Hit me, baby, one more time!

Coaster Punchman said...

Don't forget that Fountains of Wayne and others are covering her songs. Subtle satire, or do they really like her? We may never know.

Melinda June said...

See? Ultimately everything I like is cool.

lulu said...

Some of her songs are amazing, however she didn't write them.
